Infants

Infant Aquatic Intensive

Daily Self-Rescue Foundation Program · In-Home · Ages 6–18 Months · 15 Minutes Per Session

This program is the gold standard for infant water safety and acclimatization — and it is the only format Angela offers for children under 18 months.

Infants at this developmental stage do not yet have the memory retention to benefit from once or twice-weekly lessons. Frequent, brief daily sessions are what the biology demands. The mammalian dive reflex — the natural breath-holding response all babies are born with — is strongest in this window and is preserved through consistent daily water contact. Longer gaps between sessions allow that reflex to fade and reset, meaning each lesson starts from scratch.

15-minute daily sessions outperform 30-minute weekly lessons at this age every time. This is not a preference — it is how infant neurology and aquatic development work.

Angela offers this program in two formats. Five days per week is the recommended gold standard and produces the fastest, most durable results. Four days per week is available with an approved schedule — sessions must be structured so that your baby never goes more than two consecutive days without water contact. A three-day weekend gap significantly reduces weekly progress and is not recommended.

If daily consistency is not something your family can commit to at this time, Angela is happy to refer you to another program that may be a better fit. These results depend entirely on showing up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every child who enrolls with Swim With Angela begins with an initial assessment lesson. During this first session, Angela evaluates how your child responds to instruction, water, new skills, and gentle redirection. Some children thrive in a structured, skill-focused environment and move through drills with confidence and enthusiasm. Others — particularly strong-willed toddlers and consent-aware children — do better when learning is woven into play, exploration, and positive reinforcement on their own terms. After the first lesson, Angela will share her observations and recommend the session format that best matches your child’s personality and learning style. There is no right or wrong — both paths lead to real swimming skills. The difference is simply in how we get there.
A standard private lesson is structured and skill-focused. Your child and Angela work through swimming techniques back to back — kicking, floating, breath control, underwater skills — with short breaks as needed. These sessions move at a steady pace and are ideal for children who follow direction easily, stay engaged with instruction, and respond well to a more focused environment. A Water Discovery Session is designed for children who learn differently. These are typically toddlers and young children who are strong-willed, highly autonomous, or have been raised with a strong sense of consent — meaning that when they say no, they mean it, and pushing through that boundary results in tears, shutdown, or disengagement that makes the rest of the lesson unproductive. In a Water Discovery Session, Angela uses an alternating skill-and-play method. Your child swims and practices real skills — breath control, kicking, floating, underwater confidence, arm technique — and then gets intentional playtime as a natural reward and reset. The play itself is never wasted time. Angela selects and guides play activities that reinforce what was just practiced. For example, retrieving toys from the bottom of the pool builds breath control and underwater comfort. Water balloon games practice breath holding. Kicking across the pool becomes a game rather than a drill. The result is a child who is building genuine swimming ability inside an experience they actually enjoy — which means they want to come back, they trust the water, and they develop a relationship with swimming that lasts a lifetime. Water Discovery Sessions are 60 minutes. Approximately half of that time is structured skill work and half is guided play, alternating throughout the session based on your child’s cues that day.
Not necessarily. It is very common for young children to be on their best behavior during a first meeting with someone new. Angela watches closely not just in lesson one, but across the first several sessions. If your child begins showing signs of resistance — refusing skills, wanting to play instead of following instruction, becoming upset when redirected — Angela will have an honest conversation with you about transitioning to the Water Discovery format. This is not a step backward. It is Angela doing her job correctly. Pushing a strong-willed child through skills they are refusing does not produce learning — it produces fear, tears, and a negative association with the water. Identifying the right approach early is what separates a great instructor from an average one.
If Angela recommends transitioning your child mid-package, she will discuss the options with you directly. You have two choices: Option 1 — Continue your current package with the alternating skill-and-play method introduced within your existing session length. Angela will do her best to maximize skill time within whatever format your child will accept that day. Please note that in shorter sessions (20 or 30 minutes), there is significantly less time to alternate between play and skills, which means your child may get less structured swim instruction per lesson than they would in a full 60-minute Discovery Session. Option 2 — Upgrade to a Water Discovery 60-Minute package, which is specifically structured to give your child the balance they need while still ensuring meaningful skill progression every single session. Angela recommends this option for children who consistently resist back-to-back instruction, as it produces the most consistent results over time. There is no pressure either way. Angela’s only goal is to make sure your child is learning, growing, and enjoying the water. She will always be transparent with you about what she is observing and what she recommends.
No — and this is important for parents to understand. Unstructured time in the water is not the same as unproductive time. Angela intentionally designs play activities that mirror and reinforce the skills your child just practiced. A child retrieving toys from the pool floor is practicing breath control and underwater comfort. A child splashing and kicking freely is building water confidence and muscle memory. A child who feels safe, happy, and in control in the water is a child who will say yes to the next skill. The greatest predictor of long-term swimming success in young children is not how fast they learn a stroke — it is whether they develop a positive emotional relationship with the water. That is exactly what the Water Discovery method is built to do.
Water Discovery Sessions are available starting from 12 months of age. While every child develops differently, strong-willed and highly autonomous personalities can emerge as early as one year old. Angela has worked with children as young as one and a half who from their very first lesson demonstrated a clear preference for leading their own experience in the water — wanting to explore, play, and engage on their own terms rather than follow structured instruction. Age alone does not determine which format is right for your child. A two-year-old may thrive in a standard structured lesson while a four-year-old may need the Discovery format. Angela assesses every child individually across their first several sessions and makes her recommendation based on personality, responsiveness, and what she observes produces the most engagement and progress for that specific child. Water Discovery Sessions are most commonly recommended for children between 12 months and 5 years old, with the highest concentration in the toddler range of 18 months to 4 years — the developmental window where autonomy, consent awareness, and strong self-expression are most prominent.
Many children do. As toddlers mature, develop more impulse control, and build trust with their instructor, they naturally become more receptive to structured skill work. Angela monitors this progression continuously. When she sees that a child is ready to handle more focused instruction, she will recommend transitioning to a standard lesson format — which means more skills covered per session and faster overall progression. The goal is never to keep a child in Discovery Sessions longer than necessary. The goal is always to meet them where they are and move them forward at the pace that is right for them.
